Press release AUMF – COP 29
As COP 29 unfolds, addressing critical topics such as emission reduction and climate resilience, the African Union reaffirms its commitment to combating climate change in alignment with Agenda 2063. By recognizing the role of media and digital production in environmental education, the AU highlights the power of storytelling to build environmental peace and foster sustainable solutions.
This commitment is exemplified through the African Union Media Fellowship, a transformative initiative funded by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the European Union. The fellowship empowers journalists and content creators across the continent to amplify youth voices and craft impactful narratives addressing Africa’s most pressing climate challenges.
Green African Idea Lab: A Platform for Change
Among the projects nurtured through the AU Media Fellowship is the *Green African Idea Lab*, spearheaded by Tunisian journalist and environmental media expert Rim Ben Khalifa. This interactive platform harnesses the power of photography, storytelling, and digital innovation to spotlight Africa’s environmental stories. It provides young people—especially women—with an avenue to voice their perspectives on climate issues while proposing sustainable, locally-driven solutions aligned with the continent’s vision.
Rim Ben Khalifa is a trailblazer in environmental media, with over a decade of experience producing compelling content on environmental issues, sustainable development, and digital storytelling. As a researcher specializing in international public law with a focus on environmental conflicts, she represents female leadership and innovation in Africa’s media landscape.
Driving Awareness and Action Through Digital Content
The Green African Idea Lab enabled participants to produce groundbreaking digital content that illustrates the real-world impacts of climate change on African communities. Through visually striking photo reports and concise, engaging video narratives, the project has brought issues like desertification, drought, and resource scarcity to the forefront, resonating with audiences across the continent.
Key features of the initiative include:
- Intensive Training Workshops: Participants received advanced training in environmental journalism and digital content creation, leveraging cutting-edge tools and technologies.
- Expert Mentorship: International media and digital experts provided tailored guidance, helping participants hone their storytelling skills to craft innovative and impactful narratives.
- Digital Platform Launch: A dedicated online hub showcases participants’ work, fostering knowledge exchange and raising awareness about climate issues. The platform also extends its reach through social media, engaging wider audiences with stories that inspire action.
